It was the final football game of the season. The winning team would win the conference championship. Every player was giving their best and fighting with all their strength to win. Unfortunately, the quarterback of one team was severely injured and had to be carried off the field. His backup walked confidently onto the field to take his place.
On the first play, he fumbled the ball but quickly fell upon it and avoided a costly mistake. Then he threw an incomplete pass. On his third play, he threw an interception, and the player who caught the ball ran the length of the field, giving the opposing team a victory and the championship.
After the game, when the team assembled in the locker room, the coach said to the losing quarterback, “Son, which side were you on?”
In the book of Exodus, we read of a situation where Moses confronted the people after Aaron allowed them to get entirely out of control. He refused to let things remain as they were and challenged them by saying: “All of you who are on the Lord’s side, come here and join me!”
Perhaps each of us needs to respond to that very same statement. We may attend church, carry a Bible, sing hymns, and even pray. But when we get into the “game of life,” do those around us know, “which side we are on?” Does what we say and do represent the Lord favorably? What we do and how we do it is what proves to others whose side we are on.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we know that there have been times when the world does not know which side we are on. Give us courage and strength to represent You. For Jesus’ sake! Amen.

Discouraged but not defeated, his mother began to teach him at home. Much to her surprise, he learned so fast that she finally gave up. When he was nine years old, she purchased a chemistry book and encouraged him to read it. He was fascinated with its ideas, purchased some chemicals and began mixing them together to see what might happen. Unfortunately, one of his experiments started a fire, and he burned down his father’s barn. Three years later a similar accident happened to a railroad baggage car.
Though deaf and considered by most to be “backward,” he became one of the world’s greatest inventors and was credited with 1,093 patents. Among his inventions are the motion picture camera, the phonograph, the long-lasting electric light bulb and what we now call industrial research parks. Thomas Edison did not allow any handicap or any person to stop him from doing what he was called to do. Because he persevered in spite of great obstacles, he was able to accomplish much.
We too can accomplish great and mighty things for God. Whatever He calls us to do we can do because His Word assures us that we can do “all things through Him.”
Prayer: Father, we look to You for insight, inspiration and encouragement to do what You have called us to do. May we use our time, talents and treasures wisely. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Slippery Roads
Driving through a fierce snow-storm, Greg lost control of his car, and it slipped into a deep ditch. A truck stopped, and the driver got out and surveyed the situation. After a few moments, he yelled at Greg and said, “Hey, you, let me tell you how to drive on slippery roads.”
“Forget it!” said Greg. “I don’t need advice, I need help.”
David knew what it was to need help. On one occasion he cried out, “I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for You are a faithful God.”
David demonstrated his complete faith in God when he proclaimed these words. And, Jesus, when He was dying on the cross, showed His absolute confidence in God, when He uttered this same phrase. And, Stephen repeated these identical words when he was being stoned to death, confidently expressing his Hope in God as he was passing into eternity.
How blest we are to be able to join David, Jesus, and Stephen in knowing that we can say with no hesitation, “I entrust my spirit into your hand, Lord.” It does not matter what we have or what we do, whether we live alone in a cell or have large families, whether we manage great corporations or work alone, unnoticed. We have the same opportunity as they did to entrust ourselves and all that we have or ever will have to Him.
Prayer: How grateful we are, Heavenly Father, to know that we can - if we choose - trust You to care for and be with us in and through all the dangers of life. Thanks! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

David knew what it was to need help. On one occasion he cried out, “I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for You are a faithful God.”
